The tree which is endemic to  Morocco grows in semi-desert areas and  provides food, shelter and acts as a barrier against desertification. The nuts are so nutritious that goats will climb up the tree to eat them.

Argan oil owes its tremendous popularity to its therapeutic and rejuvenation properties. The oil is used both topically and orally to treat hair and skin conditions.

There are two types of Argan Oil – Cosmetic Argan Oil and Culinary Argan Oil.

Culinary Oil is used for eating and as a nutritional supplement while Cosmetic Argan Oil is used for skin and hair care. The culinary version of argan oil is extracted from the roasted kernel of the nuts and the cosmetic grade oil is derived from the unroasted kernel and has been used by Moroccan women to treat arthritis and burns. The latter is purer but yields less oil and is added in cosmetic products such as hair conditioners, shampoos, soaps, lotions and creams.

Argan oil contains the following ingredients:

  •  Vitamin A
  •  Vitamin E.
  •  Antioxidants,
  •  Omega-6 fatty acids
  •  Linoleic acid.

What to look out for before buying argan oil

Ensure that Argan oil is labeled “100% pure, “cold-pressed” or “Made in Morocco”. It should have a label that states that it is Ecocert certified,  and USDA certified.”

As for the cosmetics product, look for only one ingredient: 100% Argan Oil (Argania Spinosa) Kernel Oil. There should be no preservatives, no fragrances, no parrafinum, not even water but just pure organic Argan oil.

Don’t buy Argan oil sold in clear or plastic bottles as light breaks down the oil’s best properties. It should be packed in a dark amber, green or blue glass bottle which is more eco-friendly.

The oil should have a dark brown color and is slightly cloudy. It should not be diluted or added with preventives, fragrance, or fillers. These ensure that your oil is 100% natural and that it has not gone through a process to tamper with the color, smell, or ingredients.
